Family portraits at home can feel daunting if you’ve never had them done before. But, they are also some of our favorite types of photos to make with families. They are unique, full of memories, and usually pretty low stress.
Here are three thoughts to help keep things manageable and fun as you consider doing family portraits at home in Seattle:
1. It’s OK to clean, but you don’t have to.
Imagine looking back on this set of family photos and thinking “Wow, our house NEVER looked like that!” You want these images to bring you back to a real moment, to the way things were during this phase of life. So, consider what might be a level of cleanliness that you’d feel OK with, but that also feels true to life.
2. Your photographer probably won’t use every area of your home.
As you’ll see in this set of photos, we spent most of the shoot in one place. So, if you’ve got some unfinished projects or some art you still haven’t gotten around to hanging up, don’t let that keep you from doing a photo shoot in your home.
3. Perfect isn’t interesting. YOU are interesting.
You could spend a lot of time making everything perfect, but you’ll probably find yourself drawn to the photos where the kids were wiggling or giggling and your family’s personality is showing through. Your family is interesting, unique, and beautiful.

P.S. Isn’t this family just the best? Maybe you recognize them from their other family photo shoot at the Kirkland Marina Dock.
